Berwyn Approves Zip Line Over Depot District (Okay… Hear Us Out)

A bold new “infrastructure” idea aims to take the Berwyn Depot District to the next level, literally.

In a move that absolutely no one saw coming but somehow makes total sense after a couple drinks at James Joyce, the City of Berwyn has (unofficially, officially?) approved a concept that’s already turning heads:

A zip line running straight through the Depot District.

Yes. A zip line. In Berwyn.

🚡 The Concept: From Pint to Platform

The proposed route would launch riders just outside James Joyce on the south side of Windsor, sending them soaring east above the Metra tracks that run through the heart of the district, before landing somewhere near Lavergne's Tavern.

Because if you’re going to get across town… why not commit?

Early “planning discussions” suggest the ride would offer:

  • Front-row views of the tracks below, Ogden Ave Traffic, and beer cans left over from last years Oktoberfest

  • A flyover of one of Berwyn’s most active nightlife corridors

  • A completely new definition of “bar hopping”

🧠 The “Why” Behind It (Sort Of)

According to a totally serious and not-at-all fictional spokesperson, the idea came from a simple question:

“What if we stopped trying to go around traffic… and just went over it?”

City leaders (again… loosely defined) have framed the project as a way to:

  • Increase foot traffic in the Depot District

  • Highlight local businesses in a completely new way

  • Add a little entertainment to an already vibrant (sort of) corridor

And honestly… if you’ve spent any time down here, it’s not the craziest idea you’ve heard all week.

🎯 Early Features Being “Considered”

While nothing is finalized (because… let’s be honest), early concepts floating around include:

  • LED lit night rides for maximum chaos and visibility

  • A rumored “bar-to-bar express pass” (hydration optional)

  • Themed helmets, including one that may or may not resemble a slice of pizza

  • Possible “rush hour” lanes for peak weekend traffic

There is currently no confirmation on whether riders will be allowed to hold a drink mid-flight… but we know what the people want.

🤔 Community Reaction

Local reaction has ranged from:

  • “I’d try it once”

  • To “absolutely not”

  • To “wait… are we serious?”

Which, frankly, is exactly where any great Berwyn idea should land.

Business owners along the corridor are reportedly intrigued by the added visibility though a few have expressed concern about “low-flying customers” during peak hours.

🏗️ Timeline (Because Every Good Idea Needs One)

If this were real (again… if), construction would begin sometime in Summer 2026, with a grand opening targeted for Spring 2027.

Just in time for patio season.

❤️ The Real Takeaway

Jokes aside… this is why people love the Depot District.

It’s walkable. It’s local. It’s got personality. And it’s one of those places where something a little unexpected actually feels right at home.

You don’t need a zip line to make this area exciting… but it says something that people can almost picture it.

📍 Thinking About Living Near the Depot District?

If you’ve ever thought about being walking distance to spots like James Joyce, Metra, Lavergne's Tavern, and everything in between, there’s a reason homes in this pocket get attention.
