Chicago knows how to celebrate Halloween, but few events capture the city's creative spirit quite like Arts in the Dark.

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, the 12th Annual Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade returns for an unforgettable evening of music, movement, larger-than-life creations, and a little Halloween magic.

And here's the big news for 2026: the parade is moving back to Columbus Drive, with Grant Park, Buckingham Fountain, and Chicago's iconic skyline providing a spectacular backdrop.

Best of all? It's completely free!

Halloween Meets the Art World

Forget your typical parade of marching bands and decorated cars.

Arts in the Dark turns Halloween into a moving celebration of creativity, bringing together Chicago's artists, dancers, musicians, puppeteers, theater companies, cultural institutions, and talented young performers.

Imagine towering illuminated puppets floating through the darkness, dancers in elaborate costumes, colorful floats, and performances that transform the street into a living work of art.

Some creations are mysterious. Others are whimsical, outrageous, or just plain spectacular.

It's part Halloween parade, part street performance, and part outdoor art exhibition—with plenty of surprises along the way.

A Big Move for 2026

After years along State Street, Arts in the Dark is returning to its original home on Columbus Drive.

The parade has grown so popular that organizers needed more space to accommodate the crowds and increasingly ambitious performances.

This year's procession begins at Balbo Drive and travels north along Columbus Drive through Grant Park.

With Buckingham Fountain nearby and Chicago's illuminated skyline rising behind the parade, the new setting promises to make an already beautiful event even more memorable.

Organizers anticipate an audience of more than 100,000 spectators.

More Than Just a Halloween Parade

Arts in the Dark began in 2014 with a simple but wonderful idea: celebrate Halloween as the artist's holiday.

Produced by Chicago arts nonprofit LUMA8, the event brings together established cultural organizations, youth arts programs, emerging performers, and creative communities from across the city.

You'll see everything from imaginative handmade costumes and elaborate masks to dance, theater, music, and giant spectacle puppets.

Unlike a traditional parade focused on commercial floats, this one puts artistic expression front and center.

It's an opportunity to experience the remarkable creativity found throughout Chicago's neighborhoods—all gathered together for one magical evening.

And you don't have to be an art enthusiast to appreciate it. Just bring your curiosity and maybe a costume of your own!

Tips for Attending

Arrive early. Arts in the Dark attracts large crowds, and the best viewing spots can fill up quickly. Plan to arrive before the 6 PM start.

Take public transportation if possible. Downtown traffic and street closures can make driving challenging.

Dress for the weather. Late October evenings in Chicago can be chilly, especially when you're standing outside for a couple of hours.

Wear a costume! Spectators are encouraged to join in the Halloween spirit, whether that means a full creative masterpiece or just a few spooky accessories.

Bring your camera. Between the glowing puppets, colorful costumes, and dramatic downtown backdrop, there will be plenty worth photographing.

The parade takes place rain or shine, so check the forecast and plan accordingly.

Getting There from the Near-West Suburbs

For visitors coming from Berwyn, Oak Park, Forest Park, Riverside, Brookfield, and the surrounding communities, public transportation is worth considering.

The CTA Blue Line provides service into downtown Chicago, while the Green and Pink Lines offer additional connections depending on where you're starting.

Once downtown, you can walk to Columbus Drive or make a convenient transfer.

If you're driving, the organizers recommend the Grant Park South and Millennium Garages Lakeside parking facilities. Discounted advance parking may be available through the event's official website.

Check your route before leaving and allow extra time for weekend traffic.

Make a Whole Day of It!

Here's an idea for Halloween fans: make Saturday, October 24, a double-feature!

Start your morning in Forest Park at the wonderfully outrageous Casket Races, where teams push homemade coffins down Beloit Avenue.

Then head downtown that evening for the dazzling Arts in the Dark parade.

From racing coffins in the suburbs to giant illuminated puppets beneath the Chicago skyline, it's a Halloween Saturday unlike any other.

And both events are free to watch!

Don't Miss This Chicago Halloween Tradition!

Whether you're looking for a family outing, a fun evening with friends, or something completely different to experience this October, Arts in the Dark deserves a place on your calendar.

It's creative, colorful, unexpected, and distinctly Chicago.

So grab a costume, bundle up, and get ready to see Halloween in a whole new light.

Because when Chicago's artists take over the streets, even the darkness becomes a work of art.
