They’re Talking About Building Over the Eisenhower… But What Happens Next Is April 7

Let’s start here…

No, they’re not pouring concrete over the Eisenhower next week.

But something real is happening.

And if you live anywhere near Berwyn, Oak Park, or the near west suburbs… it’s worth paying attention.

Over the past few weeks, there’s been a lot of noise about “building over the Ike.”

Parks. Green space. Decking over the highway.

Sounds a little crazy at first.

But it’s not just talk.

There’s an active, federally funded study right now called Bridging the Ike that's looking at how parts of I-290 could be redesigned to reconnect neighborhoods that have been split apart for decades.

There’s a public meeting happening April 7 that you can attend.

🧠 What’s Actually Being Studied

The project called Bridging the Ike is a federally funded study looking at how parts of I-290 could be redesigned.

Not just covered - reconnected.

That includes:

  • Expanded bridge decks

  • Improved pedestrian crossings

  • Potential green space and public areas

📅 April 7th Public Meeting

Here’s the part most people are missing: There’s a community meeting scheduled for April 7, 6–8pm at the Oak Park Conservatory where residents can:

  • See updated concepts

  • Give feedback

  • Ask questions about cost, design, and impact

This is where projects like this start to take shape.

Not when construction begins…but when the public starts weighing in.

🧠 The Part Most People Miss

Everyone focuses on the flashy idea:

“They might build parks over the highway.”

Maybe. But not anytime soon.

But what’s already being discussed and far more likely to happen sooner is:

👉 Wider bridges and better crossings

Specifically at:

  • East Avenue

  • Oak Park Avenue

  • Lombard Avenue

And those changes?

They matter more than people think.

⚠️ Let’s Be Honest

This is not approved construction.

It’s not fully funded.

And yes - there are real concerns:

  • cost

  • taxes

  • long-term feasibility

But that’s exactly why this stage matters.

💰 Why This Matters for Homeowners

This is how neighborhoods actually change:

  • infrastructure improves

  • access gets easier

  • neighborhoods feel more connected
