Chicago's Historic Uptown Theatre Opens Its Doors After 45 Years — For One Weekend Only

One of Chicago's most magnificent forgotten landmarks is welcoming visitors inside for a rare look at its spectacular past. And best of all, admission is free.

For the first time as part of Open House Chicago, the legendary Uptown Theatre will welcome the public inside on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026. Closed since 1981, the massive theater at 4816 N. Broadway has remained largely inaccessible for more than four decades.
Now, visitors will have an opportunity to step through its doors and experience a piece of Chicago entertainment history that few people have seen in recent years.
A Movie Palace Unlike Any Other
When the Uptown Theatre opened in August 1925, it wasn't simply another place to watch a movie. It was designed to transport audiences into another world.
Created by the renowned Chicago architectural firm Rapp & Rapp for the Balaban & Katz theater chain, the Uptown was among the largest and most elaborate movie palaces ever built.
With approximately 4,400 seats, soaring ceilings, magnificent chandeliers, marble details, elaborate plasterwork, and a breathtaking grand lobby, the theater was an architectural spectacle.
Its Spanish Baroque Revival design reflected an era when going to the movies was an event in itself. Moviegoers weren't just purchasing a ticket to see a film. They were stepping into a palace.
From Hollywood Glamour to Rock & Roll Legends
As entertainment changed, so did the Uptown.
By the 1970s, the theater had transformed into one of Chicago's legendary concert venues. Its enormous auditorium welcomed some of the biggest names in music, including Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, the Grateful Dead, Prince, Genesis, and Frank Zappa.
Imagine seeing those artists perform inside a theater originally built during the Roaring Twenties.
The Uptown's final concert was performed by the J. Geils Band in December 1981. Shortly afterward, its doors remained closed, beginning a decades-long struggle to preserve and restore one of Chicago's most extraordinary buildings.
Today, preservation advocates continue working toward the theater's eventual restoration, hoping the Uptown will someday reclaim its place in Chicago's entertainment scene.
A Rare Look Inside This Weekend
As part of the Chicago Architecture Center's annual Open House Chicago celebration, visitors will be able to enter the Uptown's grand lobby and participate in short guided tours of its enormous auditorium.
Although the theater has weathered decades of closure, its historic architecture remains a remarkable reminder of Chicago's glamorous entertainment past.
The experience offers something increasingly rare: an opportunity to see the inside of a building that has fascinated Chicagoans for generations.
