This is one of those September weekends when staying home feels like a questionable life choice.
Berwyn has a 17-band independent rock festival, an Irish block party and the Bears season opener. Head a few minutes out and you'll find fall festivals, bluegrass, art, mariachi, carnival rides and one of the area's biggest Hispanic festivals. Keep going into Chicago and you've got Oktoberfest, Printers Row Lit Fest, Mexican Independence Day celebrations and the Cubs at Wrigley.
In other words: pick a direction. There's something happening.

🏠 BERWYN FIRST
🎸 PRAVDAFEST AT FITZGERALD'S
Saturday, September 12 | Noon
This isn't just another Saturday afternoon show at FitzGerald's.
Pravda Records celebrates more than 40 years of independent music with 17 bands spread across three stages for an all-day takeover of one of Berwyn's best-known music venues.
If you're into Chicago's independent music scene, this is probably the most interesting thing happening close to home this weekend.

☘️ HALFWAY TO ST. PATRICK'S DAY AT JAMES JOYCE
Saturday, September 12 | 3–11 PM
Apparently waiting until March is unnecessary.
James Joyce takes the party outside for its Halfway to St. Patrick's Day celebration with live bands, Irish dancers, the Band of Brothers Pipes and Drums, food and activities for the kids.
Expect corned beef, music, Guinness and considerably more green than you'd normally encounter in Berwyn in September.

Football is back.
The Bears open the 2026 regular season on the road against the Carolina Panthers, and FitzGerald's, The James Joyce, Godsons are some of our favorite local spots to watch.

Friday–Sunday, September 11–13
This might be the best big festival close to Berwyn this weekend.
The 35th annual HispanoFest brings three days of live music, mariachi, cumbia, folk dancing, family activities and a massive selection of food vendors to Melrose Park.
Saturday includes Mariachi Sol de México and La Sonora Dinamita, while Sunday wraps up another full day of music and family programming.

Forest Park keeps this one simple: music, food, local vendors and plenty for the kids.
Fall Fest takes over the Park District grounds with family activities, a bounce house, gaga pit and live entertainment.

🎉 BARRIEFEST — OAK PARK

Here's one Claude missed, and it absolutely belongs on our list.
BarrieFest returns to southeast Oak Park with live local music, kids activities, food from area restaurants and community organizations filling Barrie Park.
This isn't a giant regional festival. It's a neighborhood event — and that's part of the appeal.

The 30th annual West End Arts Festival brings juried fine art, demonstrations, interactive activities, food, drinks and acoustic music to the area around the historic Stone Avenue Metra station.

Then switch gears.

📚 PRINTERS ROW LIT FEST

The 41st annual Printers Row Lit Fest takes over South Dearborn for two days with more than 100 exhibitors, authors, booksellers, publishers, talks and literary programming.
And it's free.

🇩🇪 GERMAN-AMERICAN OKTOBERFEST — LINCOLN SQUARE
Friday–Sunday, September 11–13
One of Chicago's classic September weekends returns to Lincoln Square.
Two festival tents, German food, beer, wine, traditional music, dancing and carnival games fill the neighborhood.
Saturday also brings the Von Steuben Parade at 2 PM, traveling up Lincoln Avenue.

Grant Park hosts two days celebrating Mexican culture with live music, food, an artisan mercado and family activities.
Sunday night is the big finish with the official El Grito civic ceremony, mariachi, folkloric dancers and fireworks.

🇲🇽 26TH STREET MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE
Sunday, September 13
Little Village hosts one of the Midwest's largest Mexican Independence Day parades, with thousands of spectators lining 26th Street for folkloric dancers, mariachi, floats and community groups.
This year's theme is “United We Ride, Stronger Than Ever.”

MAKE A DAY OF IT: Little Village for the parade → Grant Park for El Grito that evening.
That's a pretty spectacular Chicago Sunday.
🎨 RAVENSWOOD ARTWALK

More than 80 local makers, working artist studios, galleries, live music on two stages, food trucks, kids activities and a beer garden take over the Ravenswood Industrial Corridor.

🎸 THROWBACK MUSIC FEST — GLADSTONE PARK

If your musical tastes occasionally involve yelling, “They don't make songs like this anymore,” Throwback Music Fest may have your weekend covered.
The neighborhood festival features live music across two stages, plus a Sunday classic car show and other activities throughout the weekend.

If the festivals aren't happening with the kids, Brookfield Zoo Chicago's Dinos! exhibit is still running.
Life-size dinosaurs are spread throughout the zoo, along with a giant rib-cage tunnel, fossil activities and plenty of opportunities for your child to explain dinosaurs to you with significantly more confidence than you've ever had about anything.
